The Helpful Moving and Storage Guide

My name is Carson, and when I moved from a large house into a small apartment I needed a place to store some of my furniture. My friends recommended renting a storage unit and they helped me move my furniture out of the house and into storage. I was so grateful for their help because I had never moved or stored anything before and I was clueless. Because of their generosity, I've decided to pay it forward and writing this blog is a way that I can help many other people who face the task of moving and storing the contents of their household. I hope the information in this blog is of help to you as you prepare to go somewhere new.

Don't Let Your Children's Favorite Items Go – Hold On To Them For Your Grandchildren

As children outgrow their favorite items, you may find that some of those things should be kept and given to your child when they are grown up and have children of their own. It can be difficult to find a safe place to store all of those keepsakes in your home. So, what are your options? Do you let go of these precious items, or do you find an alternate means of storing them? A self-storage facility could be the perfect solution to your problem. Below, you will find some tips that can help you pack up the keepsakes in a way that will keep them in perfect condition until you are ready to present them to your grown up child.

Books

The book that you read to your child every night for several months straight is one thing that you probably want to hold on to. Books should be cleaned thoroughly before being individually wrapped in acid-free tissue paper and placed in an acid-free cardboard box. You want to remove any oil from your hands that could cause the pages and covers to discolor while the books are stored.

Baby Dolls

Your daughter's favorite baby doll may one day get tossed to the side after years of love, admiration and care. At this point, you can safely put the baby doll away for your daughter to one day give to her daughter.

Clean the baby doll from head to toe. Purchase a pair of knee-high stockings and slide one of them over the baby doll, starting from the head to the toes. This will help keep the baby doll's hair in good condition over the years. Wrap the doll loosely with acid-free tissue paper and tuck it away safely in a box.

Cars and Trucks

Little boys can spend hours playing with their favorite cars and trucks. Although these toys go through a lot over the years, many of them remain in good enough condition to be passed on to future generations.

Use a stiff brush to remove as much dirt from the vehicles as possible. Use a damp, soft cloth to get the remaining dirt off of the finish. Use spray lubricant to lightly coat the vehicles to help protect them from rusting while they are in storage.

The Storage Unit

Since you will be storing these items for many years, it is best to find a storage facility that offers climate-controlled units. This way, the items will not be exposed to extreme temperatures and uncontrolled moisture.

When you place the boxes in storage, don't place them directly on the concrete floor. Instead, find a couple of wooden pallets to place on the floor and stack the boxes on top of them. This will prevent the moisture from the concrete from getting absorbed by the box and damaging the contents.

Place a few pest control dispensers around the storage unit. This will help to decrease the likelihood of rodents chewing through the boxes and destroying your keepsakes.

You don't have to let those precious items go. Use the above tips to prepare, pack and store your children's favorite items, so that they can one day be shared with your grandchildren. Contact a company like Palmisano Ralph Movers for help.
