The Helpful Moving and Storage Guide

My name is Carson, and when I moved from a large house into a small apartment I needed a place to store some of my furniture. My friends recommended renting a storage unit and they helped me move my furniture out of the house and into storage. I was so grateful for their help because I had never moved or stored anything before and I was clueless. Because of their generosity, I've decided to pay it forward and writing this blog is a way that I can help many other people who face the task of moving and storing the contents of their household. I hope the information in this blog is of help to you as you prepare to go somewhere new.

3 Questions You Should Ask Before Hiring Any Moving Company

If you have an upcoming move, you are probably considering hiring movers. Hiring professional movers is a great way to simplify the move and ensure that you are safely moving all of your belongings. If this your first time hiring movers, you are probably wondering what you should be asking during the move. Here are some things you should be prepared to ask about.

Are There Discounts for Moving During Certain Times?

Ideally, you should be calling the moving company months in advance. This is the best way to ensure that you get the price you want. What many people do not know is that there are certain times of year or week when it is cheapest to move. For example, the summer tends to be busier for most moving companies, and so they can charge more for their moves then. Weekends are also very busy, so if you can hire a company mid-week, you may get a better deal.

Many times the moving company will have discounts available but may not always offer them. If you ask for a discount, you may be surprised just how much money you can save.

Do You Have Extra Fees for Moving?

When you get your initial quote, you will be given a number that is probably based on the costs of simply packaging, loading, and transporting your items. If you want additional services, there will be additional fees. Thus, you may find a company that seems to be less expensive, but that you spending much more money on when you learn about all the extra fees.

Some fees you should ask about are fees for elevators or parking long distances (this mostly applies to apartment moves). There may be fees for additional packaging materials, storage of goods, and unloading of materials. Before you hire any company, get a quote in writing and don't sign until you are sure you know about all the extra expenses.

Do You Offer Insurance?

You should never go through a move without insurance. In some cases the moving company will insure your belongings, but you should always ask. For example, if the company doesn't package certain items, they may not insure them or a myriad of other things.

If the movers don't offer insurance, you may want to talk to your homeowner's insurance company about moving insurance. By asking these questions before you hire movers, you can get the best deal on your move and know exactly what you are getting into.
